breaking open the ingenue trope
"Let husbands know,
Their wives have sense like them. They see, and smell,
And have their palates both for sweet and sour,
As husbands have. "
-Emilia, Othello, (4.3.97-115)
Project Nongenue is dedicated to centralizing the voices of women and other marginalized identities within classical theater in an attempt to revitalize and reframe the role of those populations in some of our oldest stories. We are committed to transformative work that unites communities across Los Angeles by producing accessible theater imbued with political and identity-based realities and anxieties of our time. Project Nongenue aims to break open the confines of the ingenue to see what is revealed, and what new we can build.
